I have a 1995 skidoo formula Z 583. What mods will wake up this motor. Runs with most 600's, top speed around 95 but need to go faster? How much can I shave the head. What is the lowest amount of squish i can run?

aaenperformance.com has twin pipes for that engine, and saves a bunch of weight and they look pretty cool, along with some good clutch work and it would be much faster I think
there are some other small things like a different rotarty valve or something, sorry don't know enough to tell you anything else
I know some dudes who run 583's against 700's all day.. I have never run mine with one, but It will eat anything around me... do these things AFTER you check out DNE performance.. jetting max piston wash, make sure you have pipe heat sheild on.. likes hot pipe.. I use 1.7 gearing ratio, stock tra weights/ramp and #5 clickers with 16 lbs in secondary which is c6 and REMOVE both heatshields from secondary because I melted my new secondary ramp shoes in 5 minutes with them on.. and never again after removal.. I would not recommend twin pipes for the 583, I have heard the rotary doesn't like it. and YES there are 2 different jets in the carbs, the clutch side is always one jet bigger # than mag side.. Then remove the rear track coupler and pin the thing.... and hang on...
here is what my mod 583 has: Crankshop twins, tunnel porting by crankshop, cylinders ported by crankshop, bored carbs by crankshop (40-44`s), union bay head, lighting products thunder shift kit, thats about it as far as the motor and clutching, I also added c & a pro skis, power madd hand guards, and a power madd 2 inch bar riser. GO WITH CRANKSHOP! they build the best 583`s out there, its like what generis said IT WILL SMOKE 700`s! there # is(802)-878-3615

I don't think you can get the newer style to fit because the 96 and up had the side exit on the pipe instead of out of the end like your STX.You might be able to fit the whole side dump pipe and everything though off of an 96 and up MXZ.The side dump pipe was good for about a 5 hp increase on the 670s so it would be worth investigating.
You can spend $3000 and get all those mods and you will probably end up blowing the damn thing up. A solid and dependable set up is Light head mod( fett brothers), Change rotary valve disc, shorty carb boots, and clutching. you will have to do some rejetting with this set up. You can probably do all this for $500 -$750. You can also try a aftermarket can but I think they just make it louder dont really see any hp increase. DO NOT USE UFO's.
I had a 583 mod in a 98 440 X chassis. I had Fast porting, Crank shop pipes, shaved head, UFO's, custom rotary valve, and we ran 440 clutches on it. It ran really strong. Made 122 hp on pump gas. The rotary valve shaft let go and I have the top end for sale with pipes if you are interested.
I also had a 95 Formula Z back in the day, and I had a Fast Fatboy pipe and lightweight can on it. A Fast clutch kit and I did some jetting. It was the best running engine I ever had. Never burnt down, never even hiccuped ever. It ran really crisp.

Are there any shops in southeastern WI that specialize in performance parts and clutching? I don't what the heck I am doing and really don't want to screw up perfectly good machine for the sake of a better performance.
don't even touch the engine until you know the clutch.
