Tell me and be very honest no BS how good are the 800 Rotax engines. I am thinking of switching from my beloved Polaris's to the new Doo but I am skeptical about the engines. I have never been let down in 27 years with the Pol mills and I am talking about 10's of thousands of miles. What is their longevityand reliabilty? I have heard a lot of bad but mainly from Cat guys (which are the most brain washed people on the planet) they have a tendancy for lunching pistons. Thanks for your input.

Well I will likely get flamed but you asked for no BS and I don't sugar coat it. I think all the series III engines are junk in stock form. The only way I would ever purchase a 600 H.O. again is if it was a sweet enough deal for me to afford a 734 kit from RK TEK for it.
The 800's imo are junk as well. RK has a sweet drop in kit to solve most of the problems the BRP has consistantly failed to address.

I have had 3 series 3 engines a 2000 MXZ 600 9200 miles when I sold it. no problems, My wifes 03 has 10000 miles on a 600 HO had a carb boot need to be replaced and a recoil. I have t he 800s are not this good but to say all series 3 engines are junk is not true.
Funny, some people have great luck with them and others not so much. Seems like the ones with the problems make the most noise.
 I know alot of people have had problems (including me) & I know alot of people have not. I agree the with cory9 the ones with problems make the most noise.
I have 2500 miles on an 06 powertek. Engine idiot light came on once. Stopped the sled and re-started it and it went away. Sled has run fine since. 0 problems. Good power, great fuel economy. If you buy the jerrry can that mounts on the back, your friends will need it before you.

Have people had problems, yes, and they usually speak the loudest. I would too if it happend to me.

There was a change (not done on mine) this year to address the lean condition at around 6500 rpm. I don't know if this has helped with any of the engines going down. Would be interesting to see an 05x/06 ptek vs 07ptek to know if this has heped.

I have no info on the 800R powetek though as it is a new engine and only available in the summit (till next year). Not many around here.

Based on my experience would I buy again? In a heartbeat. :)

Have 05 800 mxzx ,blew up in 05 pto side(seal was ok)and blew up last week ,mag side on simcoe,New piston and jug (cracked)two rings and neddle bearing, base gaskets, rave value gasket and install new neddles and remap.Grand total $946.48.Its been a great sled, just over 11,750 kms.
Time for a new sled next year, all get another 800.
Over 13000km on my 01 800. That is with doo piston/rings as well with many motor mods. The internet has turned everyone into hypocondriacs(spelling?)
