if cat came out with all of these sleds in the 2002 sno pro chassis and cat came out with a 700 that was competitive which is most likely the sled you'd purchase all laid down motors and updated

my dealer said that cat doesnt have a 700 because there isnt a market for it but i think there is

I personally would like to see a competitive, reliable, LIGHTWEIGHT 700 twin. i for one would like a little more HP than the 600 has to offer, yet i really dont want the vibration and all out murderous muscle of the 800. The 900 is a whole new deal... im scared

I agree. A lightweight 700 that could have a considerable difference from the 600 would be a great sled. It would have to be a rocket on the lakes and a cushion on the trails, tuff combo but thats what I would want. Maybe a ZL 700 EFI SS ESR, I dont think you could lose with a setup like that.

I don't know about a 700. A lot of R & D and start up production costs go into new projects. There would only be about a 10 HP difference between a 600 and a 700. I think they should use that money and refine the 800 into a smoother sled. I haven't been on an 800 yet, but I rode a 2002 ZL600SS EFI this past weekend, and it was so light and easy to handle, had decent power, and I would like to think an 800 would be just as enjoyable. When manufacturers start becoming too diverse in their offerings, all the lines suffer somewhat. The money for the 700 start up could be used to develop a higher output 600 that could beat everyone else's 700, don't you think?

Its a matter of engineering. We could all throw our ideas on the table but its what "will work" I think there is a market for a 700. I see alot for sale now only because I think those riders are scared of owning an engine that cat doesnt make anymore. I would have purchased an 01' Pantera 580 EFI but when they went with the 550 this year I began to wonder. I think the 800 is a big jump from the 600 both in speed and weight. It takes some getting used to as I have heard from many people. A worked 600 could beat a 700 but if you worked a 700 then the 600 wouldnt stand a chance. I dont know. When they discontinue the triples I think then you will see a market for it

Cat could just sleave down the 800-85 cc on the bore and make a 700, not much cost to that. They made the 8-9,1000 on a similar bottom casing. Also that Zl600 SS is not that light at 518 dry, the only sleds heavier are the triples, as a Zr 800 even weighs less. They are 47 lbs heavier than a Mxz600, that's a lot. They could make the Zl frame lighter for the big bucks they get for that model. ;)

i often wondered why cat couldn't just put some smaller jugs on the 800 and now 900 lower end and make a 700 but they cannot do it and make it competitive

they cannot do this because that engine wouldn't be able to make any high end power because the 800/900 uses a 76mm stroke with a 81mm bore to get down to a 700 they would have to go down to a 76mm bore so it would be completely "square" (76mm bore by 76mm stroke)  which can produce some low end torque but not high end muscle
thats just like yamaha's old 500 twin which had a 68mm bore by a 68mm stroke it had great power from 0-60 but couldn't keep with the other 500's i think cats 500 has a stroke of 62.7mm and a bore of 71mm

usually engines that have short strokes with large bores make lots of power at high rpms but without a whole lot of torque down low why do you think cat's non-apv 500 and 600 engines engaged at about 4500-5000 rpm

as for the ZL SS being so heavy that is the weight of the ZL 600 SS esr  it has electric start and reverse and im sure some extra weight with the  SS shocks

i dont remember what magazine it was but it is fairly recent they weighed a bunch of cat, polaris, ski-doo and yamaha sleds and ski-doo by far lied about their supposed dry weights worse then anyone

the ski-doo weights were off an average of about 20 LBS i think the worst i saw was either 27 or 32 pounds off and that was on the renegade 800 i think they had that listed at 474 pounds dry! what crap!

overall that cat and yamaha weights were the closest both polaris and ski-doo lied pretty bad

The Renegade 800 is 489, and Highmark X, is494 at 144 inch, and 151 is 499lb. This whole reply is from the 2002 buyers guide, in Snowmobile magazine, season premiere issue, it shows the Cat 600efi 600ss, and esr electric the same weight, well someone fudged on this.  My 2001 Mxz 600 was within 6 lbs every weekend on our digital scales at drag races in Mn. and Wisc. Yes I wish they would tell us the truth, the most a sled should vary is 3 or 4 pounds!

I Want a 2003 ZRT800 with power valves and EFI.
Oh Yeah, set it up like the 2002 ZR chassis.

They could make a triple lightweight if they really want to.

Too bad they did not even make the ZRT800 for This Year.
