I bought an '86 Phazer, 485cc, last winter. 6000 miles on it. Rode it a couple hundred miles last year and now tore it down this off-season. Engine was great last year. Starts so easy, even after sitting for long periods. Carbs were even clean. Chaincase checked out excellent. Even the track shaft bearings still look like brand new.
Problems were:
Track was completely shot. Dry-rot, some tears, and lugs worn down to nothing. Also all the clips were real bad, many were missing completely.
Skid was shot. Bad bearings, bent shafts, eveything was fused together. I still can't loosen the rear axle, even. Since I couldn't take tension off, I cut the track to get the skid out.
Bottom is banged up pretty badly, from hitting stumps, probably. Lots of rivets missing or loose.
Also the seat cover was brittle so it tore up really quick after some use. And the wood in the seat was completely rotted to dust.
Skis were rusted bad, too. Holes right thru to the bottom.
