well my boyfriend on his 2006 arctic cat King Cat and a friend of ares on his 2005 Yamaha RX-1
and I was on my 1991 arctic cat pantera 440 went for a ride did a crap load of powder riding we desided to go to are friends house we hit the road and of course the boys being boys took off down the long strip to his house I went to try to catch up all of a sudden it made a load clank then the sled just started grinding and came to a stop we draged it to are friends house opened the chain case to find the chain was bad (6000 miles on it) and the slack finlly cought the reverse idler 27 tooth gear broke 3 teeth off that and the chain snaped agenst the tencener and broke the ratchet system on that and also bent the heck out of it, so it's sitting in are friends garage till thursday when the parts come in all $296.95 of them not a cheap ride.
but at least we were only about 1/4 mile from his house. oh yeah and it took the boys about 5 minates to come looking when I did not show up.

megan

point of rambleing, a chain is only good for about 3000-5000 miles and always check it before the start of a sesson the owner that we got the sled from said he had mantained it very well (all papers on everything done all but the chain). well good rideing and see you on the trails again friday!

A chain can last a whole lot longer than 3-5 but it is a very good idea to keep an eye on it. I suggest removing the cover at least once a year for a look. I always remove the cover when I change the oil. It's a bit messy but I can see firsthand whether the chain or sprockets are excessively worn, or worse, have been rusted at all. You can also check wear in the side to side play of the chain with the cover off, something you can't tell otherwise. I change chain and sprockets altogether when changing any of them. 10,000 miles isn't too much to expect of a chain if condition is monitered. Make sure it is neither too tight nor too loose also.
Why do you have to ride a 16 year old sled and the boy freind a new sled?
He rides the newest machine and your left as second fiddle?!
I think the boy freind needs to step up to the plate and get you something in the 2000's!!!!!!!!
If not I would find a new boy freind!
