when i replaced the chaincase bearings last summer in my 1997 mach z, i inserted the bottom bearing with the seal facing outside the case instead of inward like the stock bearing was. my thought was that if one roller bearing was exposed to the synth. lube, why not the other? wont it last longer if exposed to constant lube?
can an expert please tell me if it makes any difference? thanks much.

I wrote to "dear ralph" on this subject a couple of years ago and he thought it was strange too? He figured dirty contaminated oil was better than none, but if you take the inner chain case off it will have some oil in there. He went on to say a sealed bearing would be the way to go for him.

The old sleds, yamaha and skidoo anyway, always had the open bearing facing the oil! I gave up on the whole idea and left them alone because I know a lot of sledheads that have NEVER and a problem [including myself] except one guy with a polaris and sealed bearings....
