I had this problem while riding up north a couple of weeks ago. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The first give away that something was not right was when I started it up and it sounded a little muffled. We got to our destination at about 11:30 and unloaded our sleds to go for a ride. We went about ten miles and we were not even riding hard. we were on a road and were only doing about 50 or so. Then I smelled the burning. It was a plastic smell. I shut it down and on the rigtht side of the sled, the exhaust side, flames were coming from under the hood. scared the crap out of me. The canister for the exhaust was bright red for over 5 minutes. I just put enough snow on it so the bellypan would not melt. got it back that night and called the dealer in watersmeet and he told me a baffle had broken and thats why it overheated. He said he's seen this happen once or twice before. bought a new canister and it's been fine. Sorry about the long story, but I thought this would give the guys that have this sled something to look out for.

How many miles do you have on the sled.  How a guy supposed to check the inside anyway.

About 4500 miles on it. The dealer told me it was from riding some pretty rough stuff to many times and to hard. You'll know if you have a problem if the exhaust sounds kind of muffled compared to the way it normally sounds and it will be down on power a bit. I knew for sure when I took the canister off and shook it and I could hear the broken baffle rattling around.

I also own the same sled as well,I had the same problem in the first season I rode it. I noticed the top speed dropped and it booged right out off take off. And the dealer found it to be the canister and pipe falty due to baffles this was all covered on warranty.  (thank god) They told me that it was happening all over with both the 98  600 & 700's.
