I have a piped zrt 800 that is bored to 1000 and is clutched to shift at 8700rpm. I have made gearing changes before but am curious if anybody can tell me what is the best way to make changes that are effective other than buying tons of gears and switching them out. I believe stock is 23/40 and im currently running 20/43 which allows for use of stock chain length. I think though, in 500' it is running out of legs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jeff, I have a ZRT 1000 as well and have been looking into the Gearing options. I found an article at "Snoriderswest.com/features/tech" in the tech talk section it provides a formula to calculate your machine's exact MPH.
Here it is:
RPM divided by gear ratio
X sprocket circumference
Divided by 12 X 60 divide by 5280 = MPH

You get the gear ratio by dividing the lower sprocket by the number of teeth on the top sprocket.

If you are looking for more speed I think you need to go to a bigger top sprocket I know some ZRT riders are using a 25/38 combo with good results.

Your geared for 97.45 mph. What speeds are you turning? & what would you like to turn? Forgot to ask if 8700 is top rpm or what is. If 8700 is then 97.45 is top mph

21-39 is a .538 gear ratio. I suggested a 22-41 a .537 ratio. either one is good for all around quick accelleration and top end. :D
