my snowmobile is a 1996 Polaris 800 Storm, my headlights and my dash lights dim so low that i can barely see anything at night. It looks like it shorts out because sometimes they go back to normal, can anyone help me out??

that is a 95 not 96

96 Storm was in the Aggresive chassis

but those Indy lights are not bright to begin with

I agree on the potential for a short. Pull the seat and maybe the tank. Polaris didn't have a very good arrangemnt for protecting the tail light wiring back then.

I would give the voltage regulator a try, I had a '98 Trail that was doing the same thing. Picked up a voltage regulator and wiring harness off of ebay for $5 plus shipping, just in case there was a short. The regulstor did the trick.

Short or Volt/reg are the two logical first things. Next up, if it isn't those, you might look for a coil on the way down. (The process of baking off the insulating varnish is not instantaneous so that can produce some system faults in the dying process.)
