We are experiencing a power loss problem on a 98 PS600 EFI.  This loss only occurs at 6000RPM.  Before and after that the engine seams to run fine.  Engine pulls right up to 8200 RPM, and seams to be pulling good.

Other things we noticed, the sled seams to be using lots of fuel, plugs appear to be burning good, however seam to have a lot of fuel on them.  At one point we had a small gas fire coming out of the exhaust.  (kicked some snow on it to put it out)

I figure the engine is receiving too much fuel, thus causing a flooding effect at 6000 rpm, and excess fuel not being burnt dumping in to the exhaust.  Maybe the fuel pump is broke or on it's way out.

Has anyone experience a similar problem?

Hmmmm..... How did you come to the conclusion that it could be the fuel pump? My buddy has a 600 carb with poor gas mileage and we are trying to figure out whats going on... he is jetted and everything for the area he rides in  but still only manages around 6 miles a gallon....

Can anybody help us out?

I came to that conclusion cause there seams to be a lot of fuel on the spark plugs, and the fact that there was a small fire coming out of the exhaust.

The 98 600 EFI's ran a little on the rich side.  In the past this engine has always run real rich, the plugs would be black with oil.  Yesterday the plugs were a light brown and wet.  This tells me that although there is enough oil to mix with the fuel, however there is too much fuel to burn.

Maybe the fuel pump is going all the time causing an increase in fuel presure and dumping too much fuel in the the injectors.

Just my two cents.  The fuel pumps are 454 beans.  Would like to advoid that cost!
