I have a 1975 cheetah/panther with a 440 fancooled that I picked up cheap. The problem is that is immediately backfires and I think spins backwards even. The prevoius owner had it do this and it engaged the starter ratchet and snapped off a bunch of the aluminum around the recoil.

no vacuum leaks, carb clean, fresh gas, spark on both cyliders and clean plugs.

could timing somehow be off? CDI messed up?

Just by dumb chance, are the plug wire's reversed?? won't hurt to try reversing the plug wires.. only other thing I can think of is the kill switch could have a short.. by pass it and try that first..

Already tried disconecting the kill switch and ignition. I even pulled the wire harness off that goes from the CDI to the rest of the sled leaving only the coil attached and it did the same thing.

If I'm not mistaken dont both the cylinders spark at the same time on these sleds?

I did notice that there is an electrical tape covered connection on the CDI wires. I may strip the wires down a bit and try those connections fresh.

Otherwise could the pickup/trigger coils cause this?
