Hi guys, I am semi newbie and I don't mean for this to be a general Q&A board, but I want a decent answer and figured I would try here. I have an '02 mxzx700 (all stock), but I HATE the engine braking effect when letting off the gas. I have done quite a bit of reading up on general clutching theory, but have no real world experience of clutching modifications. That being said, it seems like I need to put in a softer spring in the secondary (RER)....I already went from the black that was in it to a purple with little difference. I also want it to easily cruise 70 mph without having to keep the throttle halfway open! I kept hearing about the torque these twins are supposed to have, why is it not exploited??? What should I do next, still a softer spring in the secondary? Feels like a 4 speed car stuck insecond gear, great for the twisties, not good for the highway......I would appreciate any suggestions, thanks!!!

Common complaint with the hpv27, some love it, some hate it. I know guys that compressed the spring in a vise overnight? Also guys running torsion springs, beige or white I'd start with the white. yes they fit and if you run rer they clank when backing up (like the old rers) but don't seem to hurt anything. If your way down on the clicker #'s you might try more pin weight and click up. Hate to get you started on a clutching merry go round with an all parts changed setup. Wouldn't cost much to try what I mentioned. Know that a setup that overshifts the way you descibe you want will sacrifice performance.

but why is it particular to skidoos?? or isn't it? such aggresive backshifting has got to be inefficient, no? is that why skidoo guys are always blowing drive belts? tha'ts gotta be hard on the rest of the drivetrain I would think too...
also want to soften the abrupt engagement, can I just go ahead and install a primary spring with a lower preload spec?

Like everyone else says, it's the RER secondary that has the aggressive backshift. Not all Ski-Doo's have RER so it only effects the RER models. The purple RER spring is actually a stiffer spring than the black one which began as part of a bulletin to improve fuel economy on RER models. Ski doo's actually tend to have less of a belt blowing problem than the others IMO. Clutching from the factory is a compromise aimed at pleasing the largest numbers of customers. Deep snow riders want aggressive backshift, lake riders want a hard holeshot, etc. Yes, the spring with softer preload will lower engagement speed and should give a smoother feel to it. You may want to try the aftermarket and find a softer RER spring because I think the black spring is the softest Ski-Doo makes at this time.

weird, I would think a stiffer secondary spring would hurt fuel economy rather than improve it??????? now the engines gotta rev even higher for the same cruising speed, I could see if it was so far out of the powerband that you have the throttle pegged due to big time bogging, but it's not even close...

I was given a TEAM roller on loan from Tim Bender last yr to evaluate, awesome clutch. It completely eliminated the engine breaking on my sled and seemed to absorb some of the driveline harmonics or something, my sled was considerably smoother feeling. I liked the HPV up till that point, Ill have a roller for the upcoming season.

try adjusting the belt depth so the belt sits flush with the top of clutch sheeves , I did and it seems to coast a bit better
