I am looking at buying my buddies 1996 Ski-Doo Grand Touring 500. I have ridden Polaris all my life but it sound like a great deal for my first sled. He is only asking $500 and it seams to be in really good condition. Ill be on the trails or lakes 90% of the time and possibly some ditches. It hasn't been ran in a few years so they are gonna make sure it runs okay before i buy.

My biggest question is, is the 500 Grand Touring reliable, is it worth $500?
And, how hard would it be to swap the seat with a single seat from the same year, or is loosing the weight not worth the hassle?

Thank you for the quick response. My biggest concern is reliability. Generally are these sleds and motors concidered reliable?

If you do'[t want it and he is close enough I'll take it.

Yes, a very reliable engine. Although, any 20 year old sled can have issues. The main thing is how well it's been maintained. Looks like it's been maintained well, but having it looked at by someone who knows what to look for would be a good idea.
