I have a 1999 ZR600EFI with only 1100 miles on the sled.  I took it out for a quick spin and ran across the following problem.  From a stop, when accellerating, the sled would bogg down and backfire.  When riding the sled, The throttle response was very snappy.  I just bought the sled in October and the sled had about a 1/8 of a tank of gas left in it.  So i filled it up with 93 oct, but still seem to have the problem after 5 to 7 miles.  I just put new carbontech reeds, goodwin clutch and a chip in the sled.  Please, can anyone help.

I would start by changing the plugs. Then if that doesn't help put the stock chip back in. If it is an aftermarket chip there have been alot of problems with them in the past. Those would be the first places to check in my opinion.

I dont think its the plugs.  You mentioned "snappy throttle response".  A bad plug would not allow you to get snappy response.

If you cant find anything else wrong, try this.  Drain(if you can) the 93 octane out and put in 87.  I know this sounds crazy, but it worked for me.

I thought I was doing my last sled a favor by running 93(even though 87 octane min. was fine) octane fuel. Well... about 5 miles later It started to run the crap(800 miles on machine).

NOBODY around here buys 93 octane much at all, so I think there was some water built up in the tank at the gas station where I pump it from.

I only had about 4 gallons in the tank(93 octane) at the time the machine started to run the crap.  I put in about 6-8 gallons of 87, drove her around for about 2 miles on the lake and she snapped right into it.  I also did add about 1/2 pint of isopropyl with the 6-8 gallons of 87.

your problem is more than likely throttle switch bushings, they go bad alot , they're between the throttle lever & the bar, where the pin goes through, (2) bushings ,top & bottom, it creates slop in throttle cable & safety switch act up off idle or on & off rapidly, NOT wide open......, symptoms : bogging & backfiring usually in tight trails when your just barely weaving in & out........ usually the 2 white bushings cure it but if theres a problem the cable may need adjusted, or the switch could be bad also, had serious probs with these in 98/99 carb & EFI... make sure to put them in right, the old ones are probably broke by now...  the round part goes through the lever, & the other side has a little tab  , it faces outward toward the end of the grip in the slotted hole..... hope this helps !

Buddys 98 600 efi had similar symptoms.  Really bog off line, after sled got moving it would kick in.  Changed plugs and sled is fine.  Make sure your using right plugs.  His were BR9EYA, he was using something different.

Have 98 600efi LE did the same thing, replaced the white round pieces and still did the same thing. So I disconnected the throttle block plug, ( Has three wires, brown, purple, and black I think) and problem is gone. That plug is under the handlebar pad, just unplug it. Won't hurt anything to leave it unplugged, if it has round kill switch button it is an open system. Just won't be able to use buttom to kill engine. Try that, hope it works for ya!
