Trailers Vs. Sled Decks

Hey every one, just wondering what you guys prefer to haul your sleds around the countryside. I am leaning towards the sled deck, as i have found one fairly cheap and it is built really well (home made, by ticketed welder), I think you could put a pick up truck on the thing and not hurt it. The reason I am really leaning toward the sled deck as well is because you can slide the sides in so its not in the way when your not using it, and you don't have to worry about tires, bearings, insurance, and all that other fun stuff as well. Also keep in mind that I will be running to alberta and back once every month (1100 km each way) and I will be toting my sled along with me, as I am hoping to get some riding in out here as well on days off (if I ever manage to get some of those.)

So, my question is, am I ruling out a tow behind trailer to soon, is there any reasons for or against each that you guys can think of?

Thanks for the input.

Why do you need the deck? Are you going to be hauling two sleds?
Personally I think trailers are a major pain in the butt, and will always use my truck to haul my sled, unless it was for a very short distance, and very occassionally. Then I use a tilt deck. Mostly I just use the back of the truck.

If you're going to work in Alberta I would recommend the same thing. That way you don't have to worry about where to keep the sled and trailer while you're there. And if you're driving 1100kms once a month the trailer is going to give you grief eventually, and you'll burn alot more fuel.

I don't know much about decks. I know they're really popular out west and you see them everywhere, but almost no one uses them out here. I guess most of us up north just haul one machine per truck, and the guys coming from down south usually have 3 or 4 sleds in tow, so they use larger trailers.

TRAILER!!!!

It is nice to have a clean sled after miles of travel. It is also really nice to throw a heater in there and work on your sled. You can also use it to move after you can't afford your house after getting that new Gade every year for the rest of your life.

A trailer just keeps your sled nice and gives it a little shelter when you have to do something with it.

Well newfiebullet, I have 2 sleds now, and not saying that i will always be hauling them, I will occasionally haul both, and when most of my friends and I when we haul go 2 at a time, so thats a reason as too. As well, I really just want to be able to haul 2 when the time comes, and not have to track some body down and bug them for their trailer (although most people back home would let you use it and not really care).

Fist, I wouldn't be buying an enclosed trailer, as i have shops available to me to use to fix and store the sleds, and the cost is much greater. So i guess I should have specified a little better, it will be either an open 2 - 4 place trailer or the 2 place sled deck.

Hose head, that is a sweet ramp, but I would like to have 2 place capability.

Does any one else have any in put.

Thanks again,

I would imagine a trailer would be easier to load?
You could also use it to haul anything you wanted, I know it is nice having a trailer around for misc. use.
The new aluminum ones are so light and easy to move around by hand...

Personally, I would get a trailer. If you keep up on the maintenance, tires, etc, you shouldn't have any major problems with one...

Hope you find whats best!

What kind of truck do you drive? I wouldn't think that a deck would be able to go on anything other then a 3/4 ton, long box, though I could be wrong.
But if your truck can handle it, and the cost is not to great, go for the deck. Way less trouble, and they look cool too.

Newfie bullet, both of my trucks are 3/4 cummins, the old one has a long box, the new one is a short. The deck is for the 6 foot box (short). Although, i am sure it wouldn't be all that hard to add to it to make it work on both. And I totally agree that they look great too.

Thanks man

Any one else out there have something to add, with experience with both perhaps?

If I just had one or two sleds too move I would go with the sled deck. You can drive hwy speeds whenever possible plus whenever the roads get bad and all the trailers are crawling along you will have all the weight over your rear axle

have a open trailer which i like for short hauls to the lake near home. just recently bought a 30 foot closed from classic in sturgis, seems alright. she not only is a handy garage but for long hauls to fisher branch manitoba to sled with my son, just outside winnipeg. kinda got sick and tired off all that salt on my gad when on the back of my pickup for long hauls
