Why Does The 04+ 800 Ho Have Reed Spacers?

It is my understanding the 800 HO has VForce (like) reeds from the factory, and it has 5/16 reed spacers. If these reed spacers are necessary on the 800HO why don't I need them on my 01 700 with VForce reeds? The VForce part number is the same for the REV and Non REV series III big block 600 - 800 motors. If Ski Doo is putting reed spacers in with VForce like reeds they must see a need for port clearence and are not too worried about crankcase volume. I already have the VForce reeds and a set of Fett bros 1/4 spacers

You just have to experiment. You can't say what will work on one motor will work on another. The v force may look like the HO cage but are the reed tensions the same ? is the reed tip surface the same? angle of the block? More often than not experimenting with this stuff shows little or no change. I'm sure there's a good reason they used the spacers, was it for case volume? maybe just to put the airbox in the same place? There are huge differences in what the 700 and the 800 like, just look at the porting. The 700 makes way more power than its porting and compression would indicate. The 800 make way less. They look simular but don't seem to fill the cylinders the same.

The 800 HO does NOT have V-force type reeds and the reason YOU don't need them is that the cage for the V-Forces already have a "built in" spacer. The 1/4" Fett Bros. spacer is used to clear the intake port for stock cages. Oddly enough, the '04's have 5/16" spacers and the slightly larger size do not improve hp as much (this comes from a very good source). The exact same thing can be done by simply notching the reed stoppers to unblock the intake port.

You deal with Bickfords if I remember correctly. Talk to Bill Bickford, that is when you can catch up with him. He absoluetly knows how to make sleds go fast and what does and dont work and he wont steer you in a wrong direction. He's a popular guy so he gets real busy this time of year in the performance shop with the upcoming grassdrag scheduel.
